Sugar Cookies

Happy Friday everybody!  This week I am sharing with you my family’s recipe for sugar cookies.  These are one of my favorite cookies and they make a great gift to give to your neighbors for Christmas.  Here is how to make them:

You will need: shortening, sugar, eggs, sour cream, vanilla, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour.

First, cream the shortening and sugar together.  IMG_1642Then add the eggs and cream together.  IMG_1643Next, add the sour cream and the vanilla and mix together.  IMG_1644Sift in some of the flour, the baking soda, baking powder, and salt.  IMG_1645Mix together. IMG_1646 Then add about half of the remaining flour to the mix.  Once the flour is mixed in, add the rest of the flour and mix the dough.  IMG_1647Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead the dough until it can be rolled out.  IMG_1649Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut with your cookie cutter. IMG_1650 Place the cookies on sheet trays sprinkle them with some granulated sugar and some colored sugar sprinkles.  IMG_1651IMG_1652IMG_1653Bake at 350° F for 11-13 minutes (the size of your cookies will also influence the cooking time).  Let the cookies cool and enjoy!IMG_1654

Sugar Cookies (makes approx. 5 dozen cookies)

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 4 ½ – 5 cups flour

First, cream the shortening and sugar together.  Then add the eggs and cream together.  Next, add the sour cream and the vanilla and mix together.  Sift in some of the flour, the baking soda, baking powder, and salt.  Mix together.  Then add about half of the remaining flour to the mix.  Once the flour is mixed in, add the rest of the flour and mix the dough.  Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead the dough until it can be rolled out.  Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut with your cookie cutter.  Place the cookies on sheet trays and sprinkle with granulated sugar and colored sugar sprinkles.  Bake at 350° F for 11-13 minutes (the size of your cookies will also influence the cooking time).  Let the cookies cool and enjoy!

NOTE: My family usually doubles this recipe when we make cookies.  We also mix our dough in a Bosch mixer and start with the whisk attachment and then switch to the dough hook when you start to add the dry ingredients.  If you don’t have a Bosch, you can use a kitchen aid or other stand mixer or even mix these cookies by hand.
